Riedel Unbeknown to many, Claus
Riedel introduces himself as ‘Ree-del, rhyming with needle!’ the correct
pronunciation according to the man himself.
Evolving
from the glass culture that developed in the forests of Bohemia
in the 17th century, The Riedel family has been in the glass business
for over 300 years, with 11 generations having kept the family business intact
since 1756.
Professor
Claus J. Riedel revolutionised the concept of glassware through the discovery
and proof that the bouquet, taste and finish of wine are affected by the shape
of the glass. Thus using the Bauhaus design principle (form follows function);
Professor Claus invented the functional wine glass, today viewed by Riedel as an
instrument to convey the message of wine, to bring together the personality of
the wine, smell, taste, and appearance.
“The
finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by
Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound. I cannot emphasize
enough what a difference they make.” Robert
M.Parker, Jr. The Wine Advocate
