Gerard Boulay is a small producer located in Chavignol (Sancerre’s finest
terroir). The Boulay family have had connections with Chavignol since 1370 when
Jean Boulay owned vineyards in the area. As a producer, Boulay prides itself on
a hands-on approach – everything in the vineyard is done by hand – from
fermentation (no yeast and minimal CO2) and no filtration.
The 2010 Sancerre is a blend of various scattered parcels all situated on the
'grand cru' slopes of Chavignol, from vines aged between 30-40 years. Fermented
in stainless steel and bottled with a very light filtration, this release is
sensational. The nose is complex, offering gooseberry, lime zest, stone fruit,
mint, fresh almond and flowers. The palate provides a rich, solid fruit core
with a long, soil-driven finish. Whilst this will cellar beautifully for five
years, don’t mess around - take our advice and enjoy now with summer lunches.
