The Riedel (rhymes with needle) family have been glassmakers for the last 300 years. Founded in northern Bohemia (on the border of the Czech Republic and Poland) in the early 1700s, the Riedel brand spans 11 generations and has survived wars and overcome other adversities to evolve into the iconic brand it is today.

Riedel pioneered the movement away from traditional glassware that focused purely on aesthetics (instead of function) when they developed their delicate, unadorned fine wine glasses in 1961. Riedel’s vision for wine glasses designed to enhance the specific styles of wine was a completely revolutionary concept.

During the 1960s and 70s, Claus Riedel also observed that most people were drinking from wine glasses that were too small to appreciate wine properly. Claus’ observation was the inspiration he needed to create the Riedel Sommeliers range, which was launched in 1973. This range was exceptionally well received and recognised with numerous international awards.

Following Claus’ dramatic developments in the glassware industry, Georg Riedel (tenth generation and helm of Riedel since 1987) has written the next chapter in the Riedel story. Building on the popularity of Claus’ wine specific glasses, Georg created the Vinum range – a machine-made collection of glasses that have made high-quality wine glasses more accessible to wine lovers all over the world.

Maximilian (Riedel’s eleventh generation) now runs the US Riedel company and has made his mark on the brand with the introduction of the wine specific O series stemless glasses. It is this continued product innovation that has assured Riedel’s longevity and brand power in today’s competitive glassware market.

Tip: Clean with Decanter Cleaning Beads and polish with the Riedel Glassware Cloth.
