Wynns Single Vineyard dinner
With Head Winemaker Sue Hodder

The Long Room at Pentridge Prison $165pp

This evening promises to be a captivating blend of fine wine, gourmet cuisine, and invaluable insights from a true wine luminary. Sue Hodder’s expertise and passion will be shared as you explore an exquisite selection of Wynns’ finest single vineyard Cabernets, including the freshly released Wynns John Riddoch 2020.Don’t miss this opportunity and book now for this unique culinary and wine soirée!

Join us for a very special evening with Wynns winemaker Sue Hodder at the 170-year-old castle-like icon which has been transformed into a purpose-built event space. With its high rising central atrium and soaring walkways, The Long Hall at Pentridge is an incredible venue space. The menu has been put together by North & COMMON’s head chef, Mark Glenn, who spent three years at Dinner by Heston before becoming head chef at Cumulus and this promises to be one of the most memorable wine dinners we’ve hosted!

Planted in 1891 by John Riddoch who completed Wynn’s famous triple gabled winery in 1896, Wynns was established in 1951 by David Wynn and today Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the region’s pre-eminent wine producer, and largest single vineyard holder. The first Wynns John Riddoch was made in 1982 and since 2001, every year a special wine is released from, and named after, the top performing vineyard on the estate. This dinner will feature a number of these single vineyard Cabernets along with the just released, Wynns John Riddoch 2020.

Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine Winemaker of the Year in 2010 and the Australian Women in Wine Awards Woman of Inspiration winner in 2018, Sue Hodder, who joined Wynns in 1993, is one of Australia’s most respected and revered winemakers. Since becoming chief winemaker in 1998, Sue has overseen a period of great rejuvenation of Wynn’s vineyards and the wines have never looked better. We are delighted Sue will be here to talk about her work over the last thirty years and if it’s been a while since you’ve seen these wines, this is a great place to start!

A Craiglee Dinner with Winemaker Pat Carmody

Carlton Wine Room (Melbourne) $160pp

“What the Carmody family has achieved since it replanted a historic vineyard site in 1976 is as unlikely as it is remarkable. In a largely unheralded region, and surrounded by burgeoning housing estates, it has consistently produced spicy, peppery, medium-weight Shiraz of the highest quality and character, both with and without the inclusion of Viognier, in the process establishing itself among the best of the best producers in Australia. Its reputation is built on Shiraz, but its Chardonnay should not be ignored. Craiglee’s reputation is long-held but, if anything, it continues to rise.” Campbell Mattinson, James Halliday Wine Companion We echo Campbell’s remarks, and we have loved Pat and his wines for over twenty-five years now! It’s a great story involving a bottle of Craiglee 1872 Hermitage opened at a dinner in 1972, after which John Brown Sr. of Brown Brothers thought he’d pay a visit to the site where this wine was made. What he found was a young ag sci student on his family’s property, and Pat, inspired by John Brown Sr., took the plunge by planting vines, once again, on this special site in 1976. The rest, as they say, is history, and we’re delighted that Pat will be joining us at the Carlton Wine Room as we taste all the currently released wines with some selected back vintages.

Barolo & Barbesco Dinner

Scopri (Melbourne) $385pp

Our expert wine team will guide you, providing insights into the history, terroir and the winemaking techniques that make these wines so unique.

The talented chefs at Scopri are crafting a stunning five-course menu to complement these exceptional wines. The menu will showcase the very best of seasonal and local produce, bringing you a dining experience that’s truly unforgettable.

Jane Eyre Dinner Melbourne

Carlton Wine Room (Melbourne) $235pp

“With respect to the reds, 2021 marks a sharp return to the vivid red fruit of cooler growing seasons. Red cherries, crushed strawberries, often traits of orange rind or blood orange, most are far removed from the black/blue-fruited 2019s and 2020s. Alcohol levels are much lower than the previous three years and there is greater underlying mineralité, tension, and vibrancy on the palate compared to recent vintages.” Neal Martin, Vinous

Having become the first Australian, and the first woman, to be named La Revue de France’s Negociant of the Year in 2021, Jane’s small brand continues to go from strength to strength. This will be the only public appearance Jane will be making while she’s in Australia during harvest for her Aussie Pinots. It’s a great line-up of wines and food, and apart from the ‘Corton-Bressandes’ 2021 (there are 250 bottles for the world!), all the 2021s will be featured at the dinner. The demand for what is now an annual new release lunch or dinner is always strong, so if you’d like to attend let us know as soon as possible!

7 December 2022
Top 20 Wines of 2022

MacPhee’s Showroom (Melbourne) $55pp

It’s somewhat of a cliché to say that the year has gone fast, but boy hasn’t it! We’ll be sliding into December before you know it, then after a few frantic weeks most of you will be packing up for a well-deserved break. But it’s not over yet!

For one of our last events of the year we’re conducting a very special tasting of 20 wines that dazzled us in 2022 – the MacPhee’s Top 20! It’s a list that has something for everyone, with a broad range of styles and price points, from Champagne and Australian sparkling through Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz… you get the picture.

We’ll have wines from near and far, but the overriding key is that we believe they’re some of the best of their kind that have been released in the calendar year. It’ll be a stand-up affair, with the MacPhee’s Fine Wine Team on hand to answer your questions, along with some antipasti to snack on.

Many of the wines will be available to purchase, but some are extremely limited. So it’s a great opportunity to ensure you don’t miss out, and to try before you buy. Places are strictly limited.

27 October 2022
Burgundy Dinner

Bistro Elba (Melbourne) $245pp

Following the success of the Jane Eyre Burgundy lunch at Patsy’s earlier this year, we are again teaming up with the same team but this time at Bistro Elba, their classic French restaurant in Sorrento.

Hosted by Philip Rich, this is a great chance to get a snapshot of the excellent 2020s. While it was another hot year in Burgundy and the earliest vintage on record, it has paradoxically turned out to be an excellent white Burgundy vintage, easily the best since 2017, if not 2014. Some superb reds were made, too, particularly in the Côte de Nuits.

The dinner will feature white wines from Chablis, the Mâcon and Côte Chalonnaise, while the two red wine brackets focus mainly on wines from the Côtes de Nuits, and from Village to Premier Cru and Grand Cru.

15 September 2022
Oakridge ‘864’ Release Dinner

Flower Drum (Melbourne) $295pp

Join David Bicknell – Australian winemaking royalty and 2017 Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker of the Year – and MacPhee’s Philip Rich – who covers the Yarra Valley for the James Halliday Wine Companion – for what will be one of the wine events of the year. Across five brackets of wine, matched with five courses from Flower Drum’s kitchen, the dinner will feature all the latest Oakridge ‘864’ releases together with a number of Local Vineyard Series wines and some specially selected museum wines from Oakridge’s cellars. From sparkling wine to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and with David and Philip both there, the discussion is sure to be lively for what will be a superb evening of wine and food!

6 September 2022
Chablis and Rhône

MacPhee’s Showroom (Melbourne) $55pp

Chablis and Rhône. They’re not that far apart in distance, but they play two very different, though quite complementary, roles for us. From the mineral-etched charm of Chablis, which is often our white of choice, to the spicy, fragrant and long-lived Syrahs of the Northern Rhône and on to the brooding earthy wines of the south, there’s hardly a better regional pair for a two-bottle (or more) dinner, skipping from cold entrees and seafood to meatier things, from duck through to lamb, steak and… Let’s just say they’re well-stocked parts of our cellar.

Join us for a tasting of some of our favourite Chablis and Rhône wines of the moment, from Premier and Grand Cru Chablis, seriously impressive Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côte-Rôtie to the more everyday wines that make us smile. This is going to be a great tasting. And, as usual, we’ll be opening some oysters on the night to match the Chablis and providing some cheese and charcuterie for the sturdier southern options. As always, the pricing on the night to purchase the wine will be super keen, and is only available to attendees.

*Dates, prices and venues are subject to change prior to tickets being available

Fine Wine Manager

james.tomlinson@macphees.com.au

James is proudly South Australian, an Adelaide Crows tragic and immensely proud of the superb wines that SA produces. After discovering wine and Bob Dylan amongst other diversions at university, he developed a passion for travelling to discover the fine wines of Barossa, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, meeting winemakers and learning about winemaking.

Despite James having an all-consuming interest in wine, his corporate career consumed most of his time. However, in 2019 he felt the impulse to leave the corporate world and truly follow his passion for wine. He set about educating himself, obtaining his WSET3 with distinction, and learning the ropes in the retail ‘trenches’ at the likes of Dan Murphy’s and Vintage Cellars.

With age and a growing curiosity for all things wine, his attraction to the big, wide world of winemaking, its regions, varieties, personalities, philosophies and history has intensified. He loves learning and talking about wine from all over the world, which brings him to MacPhee’s, ready to offer client’s a tailor-made wine experience.
